Jay K. Honda, O.D.
Dr. Jay grew up on the shores of Oahu. Between working at the family service station and attending Mid-Pacific Institute you could find him out in the sunshine catching waves. One youthful summer he even scraped up enough cash to buy a surfboard selling coconuts and sugarcane. His dream of becoming an optometrist led him to Pacific University where he ultimately received his Doctorate of Optometry degree.
Today, after raising a beautiful family in Kona and coaching countless sports teams, you’ll find Dr. Jay playing handyman around the house, traveling to see his kids, or still out in that sunshine…catching fish, not waves!
Kellie R. M. Abe, O.D.
In 4th grade Dr. Kellie Abe was prescribed her first pair of glasses by Dr. Jay and Dr. Julie Honda. At the time, she knew little about optometry, but her experience with the Honda’s resonated with her. Born and raised on the Big Island, this Kealakehe High School graduate worked part time at the Honda’s optometry practice and her family’s shop, Oshima Surf in Kainaliu, saving up for her long educational journey ahead. Like the Honda’s, Dr. Abe attended Pacific University in Oregon where she received her Bachelor of Science and Doctorates in Optometry.
After 8 years away, this Kona girl is enjoying her life back on the island with family and friends. She is truly humbled and grateful for the dream opportunity to return home to Kailua-Kona to serve her community along side the Honda’s who once sparked her interested in optometry many years ago.
