Cataracts

Have you noticed that you aren’t seeing as well as you used to? Perhaps reading or the television has become blurrier or colors aren’t as vibrant as they used to be? If this sounds like you, you might be dealing with cataracts, a condition quite common among people over 50. We are here to assess and explain whether cataracts are affecting your vision.

Understanding Cataracts

Cataracts typically appear as we age and are caused by proteins and fibers in the lens that begin to break down. This causes your vision to be foggy or blurry. The eye has a lens just like a camera has a lens. Usually, our lens is clear like a clean window. As we age, our lens can become cloudy or opaque, similar to a dirty window. This affects vision at all times but often most noticeably at night as cataracts increase symptoms from glare.

Signs You Have Cataracts

• You see glare or halos around lights, especially at night.
• You are having increasing difficulty seeing at night when you drive.
• You can no longer see well enough to read or watch TV.
• Colors appear faded and/or you have noticed blurry vision.

Cataract Treatment

As your optometrist it is our job to monitor the progression of your cataracts from year to year. Most cataracts develop slowly and do not disturb your eyesight early on. But with time, cataracts will eventually interfere with your vision. We are here to keep abreast of changes in your vision and your quality of life. Can you do the things you need to do and want to do? Is your vision impaired enough to consider surgery? Fortunately, cataract surgery is generally a safe and effective procedure. We are here to help you navigate your questions, and help provide the information and alternatives for your consideration as you journey through the decision
making process.
